An original production... (continued)

Unpretentious and just for the fun of playing the blues, Mansour/Grondin constantly captures our attention through a musical rapport which manifests on every track. From the very first piece, we find ourselves in a ludic universe that is ever-present throughout the album. Both dynamic and strong, the all-pervading (much to our delight) guitar establishes the very characteristic atmosphere of Sonny Boy Williamson I’s music. Grondin’s harmonica, sometimes as an echo but often playing solo, plays in counterpoint to Mansour’s warm voice. Full of ornamentations, rhythms and fioriture, the harmonicist’s playing is simply unique.

Every piece on this album, whether it’s the bouncy “Sonny Boy’s Jump”, or “Mellow Chick Swing” and its humorous dialog or “Shake The Boogie”, turns this album into a beautiful discovery. One can also enjoy John Lee’s incredible storytelling talent particularly in “Hoodoo Hoodoo” and “Apple Tree Swing”.

Finally, one can’t help but mention the little nod in the direction of the Beatles that won’t escape their fans in the last track. “Wonderful Time” indeed heralds Lennon-McCartney’s “Her Majesty” from the Abbey Road album.

In short, this CD is a nice tribute to the underrated blues giant Sonny Boy Williamson I: a CD to enjoy as the blues should be. ~ Carl Aubut (musician, composer)

Dynamic and original... (continued)

From the first piece, the listener is transported into a playful universe.  The musicians aren’t just doing the good work of reviving the oeuvre of a neglected virtuoso.  They are clearly having fun with each other: it’s a living, affectionate conversation.

Dynamic and original, Mansour’s guitar work and his warm vocals are more than complimented by Grondin’s accompanying and solo harmonica stylings. Infused with rhythm and ornamentation, the harmonicist's performance is exceptional.

These unpretentious and joyful tracks demonstrate Mansour and Grondin’s great rapport.  These are friends having a good time and these are blues to be enjoyed—straight up.
